Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About VoIP Phone Cabling

Q Do you install the VoIP phone system itself or just the cabling?
Z-Tech focuses on the physical cabling infrastructure — pulling, terminating, testing, and documenting every phone run. Your phone system provider or IT partner handles the equipment installation and system configuration. We support partner-provided phone solutions and ensure the cabling is ready for whatever system you choose.
Q What cable type do you use for VoIP phones?
Most VoIP phone deployments use Cat6 or Cat6A, which supports PoE (Power over Ethernet) — meaning the phone is powered through the network cable, eliminating the need for a separate power adapter at each desk. Cat6A is recommended for high-density environments or future-ready installations. We'll specify the right cable type during your site assessment.
Q Can you run VoIP cabling alongside data and WAP cabling in the same project?
Yes — and it's very common. Most commercial deployments include workstation data drops, VoIP phone runs, and WAP cabling all in the same project. Z-Tech handles all of it in a single coordinated installation so you have one point of contact for the entire physical infrastructure.
Q We're switching from analog phones to VoIP — do we need to rewire?
It depends on your existing cabling. In many cases, existing Cat5e or Cat6 cabling can support VoIP if it's in good condition and properly terminated. During your site assessment, Z-Tech will evaluate your current infrastructure and let you know whether existing runs can be reused or if new cabling is recommended for optimal performance.
Q Do you serve locations outside of Dallas?
Yes. While we are based in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, Z-Tech provides VoIP and phone system cabling across Texas and surrounding states. Our standardized deployment model ensures consistent, documented results at every location.
